So Jiakpalang Eating House closed within half year of operations. Not that the food was any bad, but I thought it was too forward and modern for its location and price-point.

The Thai Street Co took over the space at Fragrance Empire Building, retaining most of the previous décor and furniture. As you need to find it, the building is right next to Alexandra Retail Centre, previously known as PSA Building.

As the Thai eatery caters mainly to the working crowd, the operational hours are kept to weekdays, and it is closed from Friday night onwards.

The menu is presented with an illustration of dishes – very Thai-way of doing, with a selection of Chef’s Recommendations, Thai Street Food and North Eastern Issan Cuisine – known for usage of glutinous rice and chilli peppers in its dishes.

Recommended dishes included Tom Zap Spare Ribs Soup ($8.80), Chicken with Cashew Nut ($8.80), Olive Fried Rice ($7.80), Basil Pork ($7.80), Otah in Coconut Husk ($7.80), Sambal Kang Kong ($7.80), and Tom Yum Fried Noodles ($8.80).

I stuck to the good-old safe choices, and first impression had been positive.

The Tom Yum Fried Noodles ($8.80) was actually thin rice vermicelli, with the tom yam fried evenly into the bee hoon, complete with wok-hei. Every mouthful was thus a tinge sourish-savoury, without being overly spicy.

Overused phrase, but it was quite a “burst of flavours”.

The Green Curry Chicken ($7.80) should please those who like their gravies gravitated towards being lemak (coconuty), the type that you can drench your long-grained rice in. Slightly oily, but I found that satisfying.

If you need something photogenic on your feed, the Butterfly Pea Sticky Rice with Mango ($6.80) should fulfil that criteria. (You can add Pandan Sticky Rice as well.)

To its credit, the dessert actually tasted quite authentic – the rice was soft and warm, and mangoes sweet and juicy. Too many times I had rice that was an unfortunate dry lump.

The Thai Street Co is where I would head down for modern Thai food at reasonable prices. It is just that the location is slightly off the way.
