Ah Hoe Mee Pok – Japanese Style Bak Chor Mee With Miso, NEW Stall At Cantonment Road
Ah Hoe Mee Pok at Clementi West got into the foodie limelight, as it was highlighted that a Japanese man and his daughter, Mr Naoji Kuribara and Reina were behind the stall.
Certainly very unusual to have Japanese cook up a very local fare of Bak Chor Mee (BCM), especially in a hot and humble coffeeshop stall.
According to ieatishootipost, Mr Kuribara learned his BCM skills from owner (now co-partners) of Ah Hoe Mee Pok, and was even his apprentice for 6 months.
Here’s the update: The BCM stall has done so well, it set up a 2nd stall at 243 Cantonment Road (quite near Tanjong Pagar) and has plans to venture to Japan!
All right, the entire coffeeshop looked run-down, but certainly a favourite gathering spot amongst taxi uncles.
This stall will serve up two fusion signature items – Japanese Fusion Mee Pok ($6, $7) and Char Siew Mee Pok ($10) with Miso or Shoyu bases.
I ordered the Mee Pok with Miso , which is a steal at $6 with generous ingredients of pork balls, minced meat, canned abalone slices and a slice of char siew.
Loads of crispy pork lard of course.
This is certainly no gimmickry – the entire combination actually worked.
Tossed in a savoury sauce, the al dente mee pok had that additional layered dimension of earthy, slight-salty miso upon every bite. And I was glad not too much was added, making the taste subtle and delightful.
The accompany Char Siew, done Japanese style was tender, fatty, and did not have a strong ‘porky’ flavour.
Areas of improvement?
I thought that braised mushrooms were lacking. Am I asking too much? I guess so for $6, and would probably do a top-up in future. Also, the accompanying soup tasted unconventional with a weird aftertaste, and somehow didn’t work.
There was no queue at the stall (yet), but I am not too sure if I would do so beyond 10 minutes.
If you would like to have something more ’atas’, there is also the option of Clayfish Mee Pok, with a more unadulterated base without the additional of miso or shoyu.
The clayfish would need an additional of 5 minutes or so to be cooked, so customers have to be patient.
No major complaints for this bowl. For some strange reason, the bowl of soup was extremely tasty, as though a lot of seafood was added for the flavours.
Finished it all, though felt thirsty quickly thereafter.
With the government encouraging ‘hawkerpreneurship’ and more adventurous young people stepping out to open stalls, I am hopeful and looking forward to see more interesting (and not just instagrammable) food that would appear.
This Japanese style Mee Pok, which highlights both cultures, is one of those which works.
