by

[Bangkok] Restaurants, market and a playground. There are malls, but this same same but different.

The Commons located at Thonglor Soi 17 is a much anticipated eco-friendly mall, filled with artisan cafes and eateries.

This space known as “Thonglor’s backyard” is opened by none other than the people behind successful coffee shop Roast. Roast has also relocated to The Commons from its previous location at Seenspace.

Positioned as a gathering ground for like-minded specialised producers, The Commons is divided into 4 sections – Market, Village, Play Yard, Top Yard.

Market – Level 1
Market occupies the first level and is a playground for both food and coffee lovers.

Roots Coffee Roaster
Coffee lovers of Roots Coffee Roaster can finally enjoy Roots’ coffees on weekdays (They have moved from its previous location at Ekkamai). Besides espresso based coffee, filter coffee as well as cold brew are available.

Roots Coffee is known to source and roast some of the best coffee beans from around the world, and they also work with Thai farmers to improve their livelihood and coffee-growing quality in Thailand.

Maison Jean Philippe

Sri Thai Delicatessen
Those who crave for Thai traditional cakes would be thrilled to find assorted colourful desserts at Sri Thai Delicatessen. They make these aroy snacks and desserts based on family recipes, no preservatives, artificial colours and flavours.

Health conscious ones like me are elated to find cold pressed juices and smoothies at Twist, with bottles costing about 80-150 baht. Refreshing, packed with all things good.

Popular favourites include Berry Passionate, Coffee Cocoa Crunch, Blue Mango and Berry Blast.

Soul Food
Soul Food is known to serve up popular regional dishes, opened by an expat staying in Thailand.

Unlike Soul Food Mahanakorn near Thonglor BTS, Soul Food @ The Commons adapted a grab and go concept where diners can still get to enjoy signature items from the reduced menu.

Barrio Bonito
Operated by French and Mexican couple Julian and Mariana, Barrio Bonito is known to serve authentic Mexican cuisine at Koh Chang, serving burritos, enchiladas, and sopa de tortilla.

This is the first time that Barrio Bonito has moved out of Koh Chang.

Meat & Bones
BBQ ribs anyone? Choose from 6 hours-roasted pork ribs (280 baht) to 8-hours roasted beef ribs (480 baht) that goes with a choice of side. Tempting.

This first started as a food truck concept, also selling chicken drumstick served with mashed potato and coleslaw.

Peppina
Not just any pizza, but pizza made at Peppina is say to adhere to the Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana’s (AVPN) regulations for making true Neapolitan-style pizza. The secret to their ingredient is basic quality ingredients – only water, sea salt, flour and yeast go into their pillowy, soft, slightly elastic dough.

The Beer Cap TBC
A fine selections of crafted beers and wines are available, including many options on tap.

The Village
Walking up to the Village on Level 2, you will be greeted by a florist, Plant House, and Sound City where you can indulge in a world of great sound systems, speakers and headphones.

Jona Waffle
If waffles is your kind of desserts, there are more than 10 varieties to choose from. Opened by a Le Cordon Bleu graduate, a basic waffle starts at 120 baht, where you can addd on fruits, ice cream and sauces for a crispy crusted, airy waffle treat.

Sip cocktails inside a bar while transporting yourself back to the good old times of the English Colony.

Maygori
Shibuya Toast shop After You’s kakikori spin-off, Maygori .

Play Yard – Level 3
For the health and fitness people, Play Yard on Level 3 houses Little Pea and Yoga studio Absolute You.

Top Yard – Level 4
Walking up to the Top Yard, we were greeted by Roast and the Commons Kitchen.

Roast at the Commons is now bigger than its fellow outlet at EmQuartier while serving good coffee and delicious food. (Take note: it has moved from its previous location at Seenspace.)

If you are new to Roast, try some of their signature brunch items ranging from Crab Cake Benedict (360 baht), Roast Breakfast with two eggs of any style (400 baht), Croque Monsieur (320 baht) and Huevos Rancheros – baked eggs with tomato, chorizo and torilla.

The next time you are going to Bangkok, make some time to go to The Commons at ThongLor.

It gets a big “Yes” from me and I would highly recommend any foodies to at least visit this mall once.

However the mall is currently at its soft launch phase, there are several partners (about 20%) that are still renovating their space. Do check before heading down.
