Dim Sum Icon – World’s 1st Gudetama Dim Sum Restaurant, Too Kawaii!

Dim Sum Icon – World’s 1st Gudetama Dim Sum Restaurant, Too Kawaii!

[Hong Kong] Gudetama, the yellow lazy egg character from the Japanese Sanrio family, is making waves and finding itself in plush toys, LINE sticker store, and dangerously in dim sum trays – that will safely enter our bellies.

“SO CUTE!” But the sleepy Gudetama is facing the same fate as Hello Kitty in Hong Kong, finding itself trapped in dim sum baskets.

Diners happily squeeze buns of the bun (get it?) and squeeze ‘poop’ of chocolate sauce out from its posterior, giggling and uploading that same s*** on Instagram and Youtube.

Poor Gudetama.

Located within the The ONE at Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon, it won’t be difficult to miss Dim Sum Icon 点心代表 with various Gudetama drawings hanging on the walls.

Gudetamas in dim sum trays, kiap-ed in between burger buns, on ramen, all in the form of food.

The queue was a short one (10 min – surprise!) on a weekday. But by lunchtime, the dim sum restaurant was packed full house.

Unlike the usual dim sum menu, the Gudetama exclusive menu came with diagrams, English and Chinese description. Very tourist-friendly.

A total of 25 Gudetama dishes were available, varying in price between HK$39 (SGD$7.35) and HK$69 (SGD$13). In addition, there is a compulsory tea charge of HK$10 (SGD$1.90) imposed on each diner.

NOBODY around ordered the ‘normal’ dim sum like the usual tables, but all went in hyper mode for the Gudetama items.

Mum always say “Don’t play with your food.” Apparently not here.

The Gudetama Egg York Buns (HK$49 for 3, SGD$9.25) were frequently ordered, for ‘the thrill’ of watching lava custard flowing out of Gudetama’s mouth. Okay, we know.

Taste-wise, skin was thick though still fluffy, not that we were expecting anything spectacular. We hear that the buns are not runny all the time.

If a vomiting Gudetama seems too much to take, the next will take the cake.

The Gudetama Chocolate Custard Buns (HK$49 for 2, SGD$9.25) video have been going viral for the appeal of watching warm chocolate squeezed out from a cartoon character’s butt. LS-cinating.

Our favourite dim sum was the Cheese Custard Tarts (HK$39 for 2, SGD$7.35) with a soft, slightly flaky tart crust and creamy cheese fillings that oozed upon biting into it.

The Custard Tarts (HK$39 for 2, SGD$7.35 for 2), on the other hand, had dry tough crusts and were not as memorable.

While the Prawn Dumplings (HK$49 for 3, SGD$9.25) were plump and fresh, the skin could be a little thick and stuck to the teeth.

The Steamed Pork Dumpling topped with Scallop (HK$59 for 3, SGD$11) went top on scariness, but low on looking appetizing (trying too hard to fit into character). Halloween probably came too early this year.

To be honest, Dim Sum Icon may look gimmicky with its Sanrio character theme centered around a lazy egg, but the restaurant somehow managed to maintain a certain standard in the quality of the dim sum. Warning: It was super crowded.
