10 New Cafes In Singapore May 2015

Crown Bakery & Café
557 Bukit Timah Road, Crown Centre #01-03 Singapore 269694
Tel: +65 6463 3066
Opening Hours: 7:30am – 9:30pm (Sun-Thurs), 7:30am – 1030pm (Fri-Sat)

The florist opens a bakery. Ah huh, popular Far East Flora collaborates with Japan’s Signifant Signifé to offer more than 40 types of bread, viennoiseries & snacks. Go for the Hainanese Chicken Bread for chicken rice in a loaf. Made from chicken soup, skinless chicken thigh, garlic, ginger and shallots, best savoured when dipped in garlicky chicken rice chilli sauce. Breakfast doesn’t get that boring anymore.

Dazzling Café Singapore
15 Stamford Road, #01-85 Capitol Piazza, Singapore 178906 (City Hall MRT)
Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday, 12pm to 8pm

Despite the hype, Dazzling Café dazzled for their toasts, but razzled out for the savouries. The appeal of Dazzling had to be the décor, and hospitable plus cutesy Taiwanese-style service, where waitresses dressed as Japanese-style French chambermaids serve the signature thick toasts in prettiness. We hear varied comments – the toasts were pretty, the waffles were okay, and the pastas flat-tasting. (Read: Dazzling Café Singapore Capitol Piazza)

O’ma Spoon Korean Dessert Café
6 Raffles Boulevard #01-01/02/03 Marina Square Singapore 039594
313 @ Somerset Orchard Road #04-20/32 Singapore 238895 (Opening soon)
Opening Hours: 10am – 10pm Daily

This shop means ‘mother’s spoon’’. While the Patbingsu ($11.90) and Injoelmi ($11.90) are still reasonable in price, the Choco Brownie ($18.80), Mixed Berry ($18.80) to a rather steep Mango Berry Cheesecake ($22.80) may make customers think twice. We tried the Patbingsu ($11.90) and quite liked it. Ingredients such as the red bean ‘Korean pat’ and injeolmi are imported from Korea. The milk shaved ice was smooth and finely-shaved, had a soft yet instantaneous melt-in-your-mouth effect. (Read: O’ma Spoon Marina Square)

Bing Go Jung Korean Dessert House
Bt Timah Plaza (next to taxi stand), 1 Jalan Anak Bukit, Singapore 588996
Opening Hours: 10am – 11pm

Bing Go Jung Korean Dessert House’s new branch is at Bt Timah Plaza, a strategic venue to target the active Korean and expat community in the area. Their bingsu varieties sold here include the popular Milk & Red Bean ($11), Injeolmi ($11), Green Tea ($11) Coffee ($11) and an intriguing Tomato ($11), along with toast, grilled sandwiches and chewy waffles. We liked them, but competition for bingsu, is just too strong. (Read: Bing Go Jung Bt Timah Plaza)

Neighbours with Bing Go Jung. Breakfast is served from 9am till 3pm daily, offering Egg Benedict ($12-$17), Croque Madame ($10), Avocado Toast ($12) and Shakshouka ($16) – lamb merguez sausage with tomato sauce. There were four mains, served only after 12pm – RGC Gold Standard Burger ($18), Spaghetti Aglio Olio ($12), Chilli Crab Pasta ($16) and Creamy Mentaiko Prawn Pasta ($16). Some hits and misses, may need more than just the usual brunch fares to stay ahead. (Read: Rise and Grind (Bt Timah))

MavRx Coffee Apothecary
1A Duxton Hill Singapore 089587
Opening Hours: 8:30am – 4:30pm Mon-Fri

MavRx Coffee Apothecary has quietly popped up at 1A Duxton Hill, a small outfit with two benches on the sides of the wall. Decor was minimalistic, black and one tiles, a lonesome guitar was spotted on the floor marked with #MavrxCoffee. Hole in the wall, a one-man barista coffee place, with charming monochromatic décor, which serves nothing but good coffee. (Read: Mavrx Coffee Duxton Hill)

Maison De The
Thomson V Two, 11 Sin Ming road #01-13, Singapore 575629

Density Frozen Custard
4 Short Street Singapore 188212
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am Mon-Sun

Frozen Custard, probably the first of its kind in Singapore. Prices were $4 for single scoop, $7 for double, $9.50 for triple, and $9 for a two scoop sundae with 2 toppings and sauce. The texture was true to its name ‘denser’, smooth and creamy, won’t feel like there is air or ice crystals ‘trapped’ within. It reminded me of a velvety version of thickened gelato. Red Baron
Blk 45 Malan Road Singapore 108937
Tel: +6563346734
Opening Hours: 10am – 5pm (Tues-Sun), Closed Mon
