[Updated July 2015] For those of you who have been to Tokyo, you would realize that French style food desserts are big there – the fondants, breads, parfaits, bisques and soufflés.

French-Japanese Café Miam Miam (which means yum yum) seems to hit the right notes with its offering, décor and open-concept feel. (Read: 5 Best Matcha Cafes in Singapore)

But wait a minute. With the offerings of pasta, baked rice, pancake, soufflé, matcha latte, and hand-dripped iced coffee, Miam Miam does feel suspiciously like Hoshino Coffee. So the comparison is inevitable.

While the lesser portion of the Squid Ink Black Rice & Omu Egg ($16.50) looks nothing like the menu’s photo, this moist flavourful rice which delights on every bite, complimented by fluffy eggs is likely to be the best thing here. Must order (unless you don’t want to appear in front of your date with black teeth.)

The Lobster Bisque Pasta ($18.80) was a recommended dish from the boss. The pasta and the grilled tiger prawn were agreeably cooked, though I felt that the sauce base could have been more ‘bisque’ – richer, more savoury, more of that distinct seafood flavour.

Many of their dishes have this East-meet-West quality, such as the Miam Miam Spaghetti. Not just your usual pasta. It is sautéed with frankfurters, tomatoes, baby spinach and bacon, tossed with French butter, broth and shoyu. Break the egg, and mix it all around.

The desserts from Miam Miam score. Get the délicieux Valrhona Chocolate Soufflé ($13.80), lightly baked and almost quite airy, with decadent chocolate sauce within that is not overly intense. If the soufflé had risen about a centimetre taller (and thus airier), it would have been perfect.

Comparatively, the Matcha Pancake while visually delicious, did not overwhelm as it wasn’t as melt-in-your-mouth-fluffy as I would have wished.

As the soufflé and pancakes would require a minimum of 20 minutes to prepare, do manage your expectations in terms of service and waiting time. I hear people waiting too long for it to come, or the desserts coming in between the meals.

The savouries are generally stronger over at Miam Miam.

Other than Bugis Junction, Miam Miam has opened at Westgate and recently at Tampines One. I think we will see more of this brand in days to come.
