PODI at Raffles City – If Only It Is As Good As Cedele
First things first, I am quite a fan of Cedele. Whenever I feel like indulging yet having some healthier food, Cedele would be a choice with their homemade soups, fresh salads, wholesome multigrain beads… maybe add a dense carrot cake.
The newly opened PODI at Raffles City is located by the basement main fountain, brought by the Bakery Depot team who also came out with the Cedele, P.L.T Sandwiches and Toss & Turn food concepts. (We also say Bye Bye to Out of The Pan at Raffles City. It’s been a long time.)
I don’t quite get the concept of PODI – meant to represent Pure, Offbeat, Delicious and Infusions, with a menu supposedly offering bold new breakfast and grills. In a pre-launch media tasting, we could not quite use pure, offbeat, or delicious to describe most of the dishes, and realised I am not alone.
There were some crowd favourites such as Shoestring Fries ($6) with an option of Seafood Nori or Truffle Oil and Baked Egg Pot ($15) with pork sausage and goat cheese in tomato sauce. Let’s just say the truffle fries were not very ‘truffled’ and the goat cheese had found a way to escape from the pot. I think it was first day jitters, and the kitchen was not overly generous with some of the ingredients.
PODI’s star dish is the Duck Berry ($18), looking extremely appetizing with a sunny side up on duck confit and a slab of waffle with blueberry compote and maple dressing. Looking. The egg did ooze. The duck confit was quite almost fork tender – cannot complain.
But the waffle was also stone hard. Yes, my knife found it a tedious task to cut through the waffle, so I decided to give my teeth break.
The best dishes of the meal turned out to be the humble Stuff French Toast ($15), prepared with spinach brioche with eggs, smoked ham and brie cheese, and Prawn and Crab Spinach Salad ($8/$15) which was invigorating after a few mishaps earlier.
It is the simple things that they perform well, and the fanciful items that they flop. Perhaps PODI should stick to Cedele’s winning formula, stick to the basics, and do it really well.
