[Tokyo, Japan] Friends who visit Tokyo Japan often talk about how they can eat all the sashimi, sushi, ramen, udon, tempura and yakitori to their heart’s content. Few would say, “Let’s have eggs at Japan” unless they mean chawanmushi or ajituke tamago.

You may find it unexpected that I am recommending brunch from Tokyo. But this is no ordinary restaurant.

Bills at Omotesando Harajuku 東急プラザ表参道原宿 is one of the most popular, if not the most anticipated breakfast place in Tokyo.

Opened by Australian chef Bill Granger, he has been known for serving the “Best Breakfast in the World” in Sydney.

Getting a place at Bills is not easy. When I reached this very modern shopping complex at an early morning of 10am, I am faced with two long queues of about 20 people each at the stairway leading to the restaurant.

Not knowing Japanese didn’t help. I am here to inform you that one queue is meant to enter the restaurant, and the other is to get a queue number. (Last update is that you can reserve online now.)

After I finally got my number, my happiness was slightly short-lived when I was told to come back 3 hours later. 3 hours! The blessing in disguise is that I am stuck in shopping paradise Harajuku, and there is probably the world’s most beautiful and green Starbucks right downstairs.

As I sat at my table, admiring the open spaces, I noticed I was probably one of the few guys in the entire restaurant, other than the waiters. Japanese guys don’t eat brunch? (You can have a look.)

Bill’s classics include the Ricotta Hotcakes, Fresh Banana & Honeycomb Butter (1400 Yen) and the Scrambled Organic Eggs with Toast ($1200). Every single table was having the light soft fluffy pancakes. Every Japanese lady was all smiles after eating it.

I would recommend the Full Aussie Breakfast with Toast, Mushrooms, Bacon, Roast Tomato and Chipolatas (1800 Yen). You would realise Bill’s scrambled eggs are not that ‘scrambled’, with slippery texture and a light buttery fragrance.

This feels creamier than usual, and it is the smoothness which is the winning formula.

Overall a satisfying and relaxing meal, but I didn’t feel that the meal warranted that long wait. Perhaps it is because brunch places like this are not that prevalent in Japan yet. The Japanese ladies probably love being there, rather than eating there.

  1. i rem going to bills Kamakura in 2008 and it was a 3 hr wait too! i got my number at 3pm and ended up having brunch food (ricotta pancakes, scrambled eggs) at 7pm! 😉

  5. Hi Daniel, Thanks for the recommendation! I tried making a reservation online but it seems like booking time available is from 3pm onwards which means I won’t get to try their breakfast! Any idea if breakfast is not open for reservation or I’m not getting it right? Thanks!
